Weather
Kangding, and the rest of Ganzi Prefecture, lies on the eastern portion of the Tibetan Plateau. Most of this region lies between 3000 meters and 4000 meters (10,000 feet and 13,000 feet) above sea level. Some mountain passes climb above 5000 meters (16,400 feet). Winters are generally dry and cold while summers are typically mild. Due to the high elevation, weather often can be unpredictable. What starts out as a sunny mild day can sometimes end in freezing temperatures and snow, particularly in areas above 4000 meters. It is best to be prepared for all types of weather, especially if you plan on trekking or camping.
The high season for travel in Ganzi Prefecture is from late June through early October, however, the region can be visited all year long. Summers on the eastern Tibetan Plateau are generally rainy for a portion of the day, while the rest of the year is usually quite dry and sunny. Kangding is in its own steep valley and seems to have its own weather! Generally, there is a wet season with more rainy days between March – September. October – February is usually dry and sunny most days.
The Sun
The high land has a dry climate, low oxygen content, dust and strong ultraviolet rays, which may easily hurt your skin. Make sure you use sunblock, and bring a head covering/sunhat while being out on a clear day!
